The VAL3501–3502–M device is a controller for buck–boost LED drivers that incorporate a proprietary adaptive on–time control algorithm for driving multiple strings of LEDs with more than 90% efficiency. This device integrates all the necessary functions required to operate a buck–boost topology converter including: a powerful gate driver; a low–side/high–side current sense amplifier; error amplifiers; a temperature sensing block; and a VALN–compliant diode. It offers a wide input voltage range of up to Vbat. This family of evaluation boards has been developed by Maxim Integrated to evaluate the features and performance of their VAL3501–3502–M controller.
The VAL3501–3502–M can be used to drive multiple strings of LEDs with different current ratings and power levels. The device includes built-in features, such as over–voltage protection and current regulation, to ensure safe and reliable LED operation over a wide voltage range. The VALN diode also helps reduce power losses from coil stimulation. This combined with the adaptive on–time control algorithm ensures high system efficiency while simultaneously delivering power to a high number of LEDs.
The working principle of the VAL3501–3502–M evaluation board is based on a buck–boost topology converter. This type of topology uses a pulse width modulation (PWM) control scheme that allows the LED current to remain at a constant level over a wide input voltage range. The voltage boost is achieved by a switch that is placed between the input voltage source and the power stage. The switch is turned on and off through the use of an internal, adjustable PWM comparator.This PWM comparator is connected to the current loop and compares the regulated output current with the reference voltage at the output of the error amplifier. When the error amplifier detects any mismatch between the regulated current and the reference voltage, it adjusts the duty cycle of the switch to compensate for the difference. Additionally, the VAL3501–3502–M also includes an adjustable soft-start to ensure a smooth transition from startup to steady state operation.
The VAL3501–3502–M evaluation board includes all the features needed for a successful evaluation process. The board includes all the necessary components to drive a single-string of LEDs, including a TCXO, an oscillator and an inductor. The evaluation board also comes with a comprehensive GUI that allows easy maneuverability through all the settings and parameters of the evaluation board. The board also provides protection against over-voltage, over-current and short-circuit conditions.
