The THS4051IDGN is an integrated dual-channel 100% rail-to-rail amplifier with integrated input and output protection and fold back current limiting, making it suitable for a wide variety of applications from audio and video instrumentation, to portable battery-powered applications.

The THS4051IDGN is an ideal amplifier for both standard instrumentation and portable battery powered applications where minimum power consumption in required. Its features include an over-temperature limit, an integrated 1k ohm input resistance, foldback current limiting, and integrated input and output protection.

The THS4051IDGN is primarily used in instrumentation, audio/video systems, A/D converters, portable battery operated devices and as a buffer amplifier. Its integrated current- limting measures protect the amplifier itself from problems caused by short- circuit or over-input current scenarios.

In instrumentation, the THS4051IDGN is used largely as the low-noise, low-drift instrumentation amplifier between two resistors, the gain of which is set by the resistor values. In audio/video systems it is well suited to preamp and buffer applications, able to drive current differences such as those generated by 3-wire microphones and/or electro-static speakers.

It is also frequently used in battery operated devices, often in conjunction with an analog switch, to maintain high reliability and low cost. Additionally, the THS4051IDGN is often used in A/D converters to buffer the analog signal after the sampling phase and prior to the analog-to-digital conversion process. In this application the high speed performance and protection features of the THS4051IDGN give it an advantage over other amplifiers.

The THS4051IDGN has a working principle of using a differential input stage to provided high common mode rejection and precise gain control. It contains two differential inputs and two outputs, or one input and one output. The input is a combination of two differential input stages, commonly referred to as "slope and intercept" (S&I) inputs. This type of input allows precise gain control and rejects common mode signals, making the amplifier immune to errors caused by noise and crosstalk.

The differential inputs are then amplified and converted to single-ended output signals for use in A/D converters, buffer amplifiers, and other applications. On the output side, the THS4051IDGN is able to provide foldback current limiting and integrated protection against over-currents and excessive voltages, making it a very reliable amplifier, even in extreme voltage and temperature ranges.
