Optoisolators, sometimes called optocouplers or photocouplers, are electronic components that utilize light emitted from a LED to optical isolate otherwise electrically connected components. In this regard, they create an electrically isolated environment between the controlled and controlling elements. One of the most popular optoisolators is the TIL 117, also known as the 4N35 optoisolator. The TIL 117 optoisolator consists of an infrared LED input stage and a phototransistor output stage with both electrically insulated from each other.

The primary application field of the TIL 117 optoisolator is in the area of industrial Instrumentation and systems control. The TIL 117 provides isolation between PLCs (programmable logic controllers) and other controlling modules while providing electrical isolation to protect against potential surges and other noises. The TIL 117 can also be used in household appliances, such as mini TVs, to provide electrical isolation between the remote controller and the appliance.
