Working Principle
The functioning of the Thyristor starts with the application of a gate signal. The gate signal is applied to the gate terminal of the thyristor to control electric current or voltage flow through the device. It is then amplified by the gate which provides enough power to open the thyristor. When current flow through the thyristor, it is switched on and continues to be so unless the current and gate control signal are decreased or removed.
When the voltage across the thyristor is negative, the P-N junction of anode and cathode goes into open state. This causes the anode current to be reduced to zero, turning off the thyristor. The delay occurring until the anode current to be reduced to zero is known as reverse recovery time. The reverse recovery time describes the time it takes for the thyristor to turn off in response to a gate signal and for the anode current to return to its normal level when the operation condition is reversed.
The thyristor also allows a high current to be switched using lower power control signals. This is accomplished by allowing a limited current to flow from gate to anode, which, in turn, increases the anode current. The current conducting capability of the thyristor can be increased without increasing the power of the gate signal by using a gate turn-on or trigger circuit.
