TL431AIP Application Field and Working Principle

The TL431AIP voltage reference is commonly used in many power management integrated circuit (PMIC) designs. A current source is connected between the cathode and the adjustment pin, and between the adjustment pin and ground. The voltage between the cathode and the adjustment pin is divided in two by external resistors to set the output voltage. The current source creates a reference voltage, and when the output voltage feedback is greater than the reference, current flows out of the adjustment pin to the cathode, pushing the voltage down to the desired level. Conversely, when the output voltage Feedback drops below the reference voltage, current flows into the adjustment pin, raising the voltage up to the desired level.
