The TL431BQDR is a three-terminal adjustable shunt regulator family with a fixed output voltage of 2.5V and an adjustable output voltage up to 36V. The TL431BQDR family includes 5 different versions, each with a ±15%, 10%, 5% and 2% initial accuracy tolerance, making it easy to obtain the desired output voltage. The TL431BQDR family also has low current threshold and low saturation voltage characteristics, low temperature drift (not more than 5ppm/°C) and a fast response time of 1.4 μs.

The TL431BQDR is part of the PMIC (Power Management IC) family and classified as a voltage reference device. Voltage reference devices are used to maintain a pre-set stable voltage for any off-line power convertor or power monitoring system. Most of the time a microcontroller or FPGA (Field Programmable Gate Array) is used to monitor the voltage output of the voltage reference device, and adjust the output accordingly.

The TL431BQDR works by controlling the output voltage level by varying the output current. During normal operation the output voltage will be maintained at the set voltage. When a voltage greater than the output voltage is applied to the input, the current is increased to reduce the output voltage.
