TL431ILPG is a commonly used PMIC device in the field of Voltage Reference. It has integrated a precise two-terminal adjustable shunt regulator, which can provide a high precision and precise reference voltage. The TL431ILPG consists of five pins, an Output Pin, an Adjustable Pin, a Refernce Voltage Pin, a Ground Pin and a VCC pin. The Adjustable pin is the key part, when a voltage is applied to the adjustable pin, it can adjust the output voltage of the device. The Resistor and Capacitor connected between this pin and GND fixes the output voltage to a specific level. The resistor sets the reference voltage, while the capacitor affects the transient stability of the regulator.

The working principle of TL431ILPG is quite simple. When the voltage applied to the adjustable pin is greater than the reference voltage, the output voltage value begins to increase; When the voltage applied is less than the reference voltage, the output voltage goes down. The output voltage value is reflects the difference between input voltage applied to the adjust pin and the reference voltage.

Some applications have to limit the voltage range within which the device can work. In these cases, an additional resistor can be used to set a maximum and minimum allowed voltage. The minimum voltage is set by connecting the adjustable pin to the GND through a resistor, and therefore the voltage applied to the adjustable pin will not be able to lower than the GND. The maximum voltage is set by connecting the adjustable pin to VCC through a resistor. If a voltage higher than VCC is applied to the adjustable pin, a current limitation resistor can be used to limit the current.
