In order to understand the basic operation principle of TL497ACDR, it is necessary to first state that the highest input voltage into this regulator can be as high as 70V, while the output voltage can as low as 2.85V. This device also features an adjustable switching frequency, where the typical range is between 100kHz to 1MHz. So, how does the regulator work to achieve such performance?The TL497ACDR is basically a two-stage design, consisting of a voltage-error amplifier and a PWM (power-wise modulation) circuit. Therefore, firstly, the voltage-error amplifier is used to detect the difference of the input and the output voltages, and then use this error signal to control the PWM circuit in order to vary the duty cycle of the pulse signal and regulate the output voltage. What is more, TL497ACDR also includes some other key building blocks for extra convenience and performance. For example, a current sense amplifier is integrated in the device, helping to vary the level of the reference current. This reference current is then used by a PWM comparator in the integrated PWM-control circuit, in order to generate accurate error signals for controlling the output voltage. In addition, the TL497ACDR also contains a soft-start capability, which is realized through a capacitor connected externally. This prevents inrush current when the device is first powered with the input voltage, as the output voltage slowly ramps up.Finally, depending on the version, the TL497ACDR can also be switched between different operating modes either by controlling the shutdown pin or by controlling the gain-select pin.
