TL494CPW Application Field and Working Principle

TL494CPW is a DC/DC switching controller IC from Texas Instruments’s Power Management IC (PMIC) Voltage Regulator family. It is designed to provide a cost optimized, reliable, and small size circuit solution for the conversion of DC power. The TL494CPW is an adjustable, pulse width modulated (PWM) switching regulator with high current capacity for the control of a switching power supply system. The device has an integrated oscillator which simplifies the power conversion design. It also includes comprehensive essential protection features such as UVLO/OVP/OTP that increase the safety and reliability of the power supply system.The TL494CPW is capable of providing high current output and high efficiency while giving fast transient response. It has an on-chip comparator which can monitor low and high limits to protect the power supply. The device also provides short circuit protection and thermal shutdown function that prevents the circuit from overheating. The TL494CPW device offers a built-in PWM current control loop, allowing the output current to be accurately controlled. The output current is sampled by sensing resistor at the output terminal and compared with an internal reference voltage. The cycle-by-cycle peak current limit and average current limit can be programmed through external components.The TL494CPW has a wide input voltage range from 4.5 V to 36 V and an output voltage range from 0.8 V to 5 V. The peak response frequency is 4.6 kHz and the operating temperature range is from -40 °C to 125 °C. The device comes in a surface mount SO-14 package with exposed die surface for enhanced thermal performance.The TL494CPW utilizes an on-chip Error Amplifier, which compensates the output voltage, and allows the output voltage to be precisely regulated. The Error Amplifier produces an output signal which is compared to a reference voltage, and the error difference is amplified and fed into the output voltage control circuits.The TL494CPW device has a programmable output current limit, allowing the user to select the safe output current limit according to the requirement and the application. The current limit is programmed via a resistor connected between the COMP pin and the ground. The current limit range can be programmed from 0.2 A to 6 A.The TL494CPW device also has an on-chip overvoltage protection (OVP) circuit. This OVP circuit monitors the output voltage and will shut down the power supply if the voltage is above a certain threshold. A zener diode, resistor and capacitor connected between the OVP and ground pins forms a circuit that allows the user to adjust the overvoltage protection level.The TL494CPW device is ideal for applications such as DC-DC converters, motor drives, high power UPS systems, industrial controls, and other power conversion applications. It is also well-suited for low power devices such as smoke alarms, wireless communication systems, and home appliances.Overall, the TL494CPW device provides a high-performance, cost-effective, and reliable solution for DC-DC power conversion applications.
