As the ADC cycles through the bits, the reference voltage changes to the next level. When the input voltage matches or exceeds the reference voltage, the corresponding bit is set to 1 and the next reference voltage is checked. This cycle is repeated until all the bits have been sampled and the conversion is complete. The device also features an on-chip reference source, which maintains a stable reference for accurate conversion results.
