The linear integrated circuit TLC374IN is an operational amplifier IC is used an independent comparator with an open drain output, operating from single and dual supply. Its open drain (open collector) output can directly sink current up to 20 mA and can drive many TTL loads. It is similar to the TLC372 comparator, but it can also draw power from their output pins if the inputs are left unconnected.

The TLC374IN is designed for high input impedances, which makes them suitable for use with slowly changing signals and bridges. The gain and output capability of the comparator are both determined by the output transistors and the over-driving current capability of the output transistor determines the device’s output current. The open output pin of the comparator allows externally supplied power or sinks current from within the device to be drawn from the output pin.

The applications of the TLC374IN include peak detection, analog to digital converters, crystal oscillators, sample and hold circuits, analog comparators, low pass filters and current sinks. It can also be used to enhance the performance of amplifier chains, filters and amplifiers.

The working principle of the TLC374IN is that the open collector output pins of the device are used to provide the necessary current to the output stages of the device. The open collector is used to sink the bias current of the output transistor. When a high voltage (V DD ) is applied to the output pin, it will force the output transistor’s drain voltage to remain at V DD . When a lower voltage is applied, it will sink the output transistor’s current, reducing the voltage on the output pin and allowing the device to draw current from its output pin. This current helps to drive the output Zener diode and output transistor, allowing the device to operate at higher speeds.

The input pins of the TLC374IN are designed to accept a wide range of input signals. The input impedance of the device is typically greater than 1012 Ω, making it suitable for use with slowly changing signals, bridges, etc. The comparator has an excellent input noise rejection ratio and its output impedance is typically greater than 10 Ω, making it suitable for use with large capacitive loads.
