The TLK106RHBT is a single-port Ethernet PHY for 10Base-T and 100Base TX signaling. This device integrates all the physical-layer functions needed to transmit and receive data on standard twisted-pair cables. The TLK10x supports the standard Media Independent Interface (MII) and Reduced Media Independent Interface (RMII) for direct connection to a Media Access Controller (MAC). The TLK10x is designed for power-supply flexibility, and can operate with a single 3.3V power supply or with combinations of 3.3V and 1.55V power supplies for reduced power operation. The TLK106RHBT uses mixed-signal processing to perform equalization, data recovery, and error correction to achieve robust operation over CAT 5 twisted-pair wiring. This device not only meets the requirements of IEEE 802.3, but maintains high margins in terms of cross-talk and alien noise. The TLK106RHBT Ethernet PHY has a special Power Back Off mode to conserve power in systems with relatively short cables. This mode provides the flexibility to reduce system power when the system is not required to drive the standard IEEE 802.3 100m cable length, or the extended 150m, error-free cable reach of the TLK10x.
6. Boot configuration
Bootstrapping configuration is a convenient way to configure the TLK106RHBT into a specific mode of operation. Some function pins are used as configuration inputs. The logic states of these pins are sampled during reset and are used to configure the device into a specific mode of operation. The following table describes the bootstrap configuration. A 2.2kΩ resistor is used to pull down or pull up to change the default configuration. If the default options are desired, no external pull-up or pull-down resistors are required. Because these pins may have alternate functions after reset is deactivated, they cannot be connected directly to VCC or GND.
7. Architecture
The TLK106RHBT Fast Ethernet transceivers are the physical layer core for Ethernet 100Base-TX and 10Base-T applications. The TLK106RHBT contains all the active circuitry required to implement the physical layer functions to transmit and receive data over standard CAT 3 and 5 unshielded twisted pair cables. The core supports the IEEE 802.3 standard Express Media Independent Interface (MII) and Reduced Media Independent Interface (RMII) for direct connection to MAC/switch ports. The TLK106RHBT uses mixed-signal processing to perform equalization, data recovery, and error correction for robust, low-power operation over existing CAT 5 twisted pair cabling. The TLK106RHBT architecture not only meets the IEEE802.3 requirements, but also maintains a high level of margin over the IEEE requirements for NEXT, Alien and External noise.
