TLP16CA application field and working principle
TVS (Transient Voltage Suppression) diodes have been in use and development since the early 1970\'s, but were not commercially accepted until the 1990\'s. They are specifically designed to protect semiconductors from voltage transient events, such as Electrostatic Discharge (ESD) and Lightning (LSP), that are generated from either external sources or internally from operations in the devices. TVS could be sorted by their unidirectional or bidirectional usage, which are indicated as unidirectional TVS (UTVS) and bidirectional TVS (BTVS). The TLP16CA belongs to the family of unidirectional TVS. This 11-lead SOP (small outline package) device is designed to protect against electrostatic discharge (ESD) during handling, assembly and system level testing. This device has a breakdown voltage of 16V ± 5%. With a low clamping voltage, this device provides continuous protection against ESD up to ±4kV (HBM per IEC 61000‑4‑2). The TLP16CA is available in plastic, thermoset package, with a minimum creepage distance of 13.4mm and clearance of 7.1mm. This device is suitable for use in voltage sensitive locations. In terms of application field, the TLP16CA is well suited for a wide range of ESD protection, such as automotive, telecom, computer and consumer applications. Taking its good electrical characteristics into consideration, this device is able to protect many types of semiconductors from damage due to unexpected ESD events. In addition, the low on-state resistance and the wide range of package form, make the TLP16CA a great choice for ESD protection on board level. The TLP16CA works on a simple principle. When a transient voltage spike occurs, the device clamps the voltage level to provide a safe level of protection. This is because the breakdown voltage of the device is lower than the applied voltage, while the switch-off voltage of the device is higher than the clamping voltage. When the voltage reaches the breakdown voltage, the current passes through the device and the voltage is clamped. The clamping voltage depends on the material type of the TVS diode, and the max current that the TVS diode can deliver. The more current the TVS diode can deliver, the higher the clamping voltage. In terms of operation characteristics, the TLP16CA could offer a wide range of protection against widely differing voltage transients. It reduces the peak voltage due to ESD events by shorting or diverting the energy away from sensitive semiconductors and other sensitive elements. This device is designed with reverse dynamic resistance (RDR), which protects the device from overload of current and keeps the voltage at a safe level. The high temperature operating junction of the TLP16CA is 175 ℃, which means the device could work properly even in severe temperature while providing reliable ESD protection. In conclusion, the TLP16CA belongs to the family of Unidirectional TVS. This device is suitable for use in voltage sensitive locations, offering a wide range of ESD protection, such as automotive, telecom, computer and consumer applications. It works on a simple principle to keep the voltage at a safe level under ESD events.
