TVS - Diodes

A transient voltage suppressor diode, or TVS, is an electronic component that acts similarly to a diode in that it allows a current to flow in only one direction, while blocking the current in the reverse direction. The difference is that the TVS diode is designed to withstand surges, which are short-lived voltage and current variations, and to protect circuits against damage from overvoltage transients. As such, TVS diodes are most commonly found in applications where electrical protection is required.

TLP22CA Application Field and Working Principle

The TLP22CA is a bidirectional suppressor diode that is designed to protect low-voltage circuits from overvoltage transients by clamping dangerous voltage levels to a safe operating level. It has a high-peak Pulse power rating of 350 W and a maximum repetitive peak reverse voltage of 600 V. It can handle currents up to 1.8 A and can absorb electrostatic discharge up to 8 kV.

The TLP22CA diode is designed to clamp electrical transients that may occur on a power supply line in applications such as white goods, home appliances, computer peripherals, telecom accessories, and audio-video equipment. The device is able to do this due to its reverse standoff voltage, which is the voltage at which the diode begins to conduct. Any voltage applied to the TLP22CA that is above the reverse breakdown voltage of the diode will be quickly absorbed and dissipated by the diode, thus protecting the connected devices from electrical damage. Additionally, the device is able to do this without significantly affecting the low-voltage signals on the power supply line.

When a signal higher than the reverse breakdown voltage and rated working voltage is applied to the TLP22CA, the diode will absorb the voltage and provide a low impedance path, which will result in a current surge. The diode is designed to absorb this surge without becoming damaged or shorting out. The absorbed energy is dissipated as heat through a thermal connection on the diode. This thermal connection can be used to fasten a heatsink, allowing the device to dissipate the energy more effectively and prevent it from becoming damaged.
