Optoisolators or optocouplers are devices used to electrical isolation between two circuits. They operate by using a light emitting device such as a light emitting diode (LED) on one side and a photosensitive device such as a phototransistor on the other side. By isolating the two circuits they protect sensitive equipment from noise or other high voltage surges generated by the external circuit.
