Solid state relays (SSRs) are specialized devices which act as a switch, controlling an electrical power circuit they are connected to. SSRs use optoelectronics as a means to switch on/off an electrical circuit from a control signal by using the output of a light emitting diode (LED). The TLP3403R is a type of solid state relay that must be used in combination with an optically isolated (IPL) triac for medium voltage applications such as AC motor control, fan timers, vending machines, and building lighting controls. Its reaction time is 0.45ms with a maximum load current of 40A, Max pulsed-time off-state current of 40A, and operating temperature range of -30oC – 70oC.

In terms of operation, the TLP3403R consists of a phototriac switch and a light-emitting diode (LED) housed in a plastic casing. The LED is located behind the phototriac switch and is used to provide optical insulation between the control and switched circuits. When the LED is energized, the phototriac switch turns on the optically isolated triac, which in turn activates the load circuit and allows current to flow. To turn off the circuit, the LED is de-energized and the trigger current is removed from the phototriac switch, causing the optically isolated triac to switch off the load circuit. This structure provides complete isolation between the connected and switched circuits, eliminating potential fluctuations in current as well as physical interference from mechanical devices such as contactors.

In order to use a TLP3403R, proper connections with the AC power source and other devices are required. AC input circuits should connect the TLP3403R to an AC source having a rating of up to 600Vac. On the other side, the AC output connection must be connected to an optically isolated triac with the same rated current as the SSR. The type of optically isolated triac used with the TLP3403R must have an optical isolation and a thermal conductivity value not lower than the phototriac switch in order to maintain the optical input-output isolation. The required protection of the SSR is provided by the optically isolated triac, which must be rated for the same current as the SSR.

In its most common application, the TLP3403R SSR can be used for controlling AC motor speed, as well as for fan timers. It can also be used for HVAC, refrigeration, vending machines, and lighting control. Lighting control using the TLP3403R can be used for simple switches, along with dimmers for special effects. When used for HVAC applications, both AC and DC systems can be switched on and off with the TLP3403R. For vending machines, the SSR is used to turn on and off compressors, heating elements, and fan motors. Finally, it can also be used in refrigeration applications to turn on and off valves, compressors, and other devices.
