Optoisolators are a type of electronic component that couple electric signals between two systems that are isolated from each other. With the technology behind them having been around since the early 1950s, optoisolators have become one of the most versatile and reliable components in the world of electronics.The TLP626-4(F) is a optoisolator that provides a Gallium Arsenide infra-red LED, which is optically coupled to a phototransistor. The TLP626-4(F)\'s function is to transfer electrical signals across a gap between an input and a subsequent output, without the two systems being linked together. This optoisolator is typically used in microcontrollers, computers, medical equipment, military equipment, and more. As the optoisolator provides a Galium Arsenide infra-red LED which is optically coupled to a phototransistor, the signal is transferred without the need for an external voltage source. The transfer of information occurs when the LED is activated and illuminates the phototransistor base. Due to the optical isolation, the LED is insensitive to electrical noise, providing a much more dependable signal transfer than traditional electrical coupling.

The TLP626-4(F)\'s can also be used in power switching applications. When the LED illumination signals the phototransistor, the latter will be turned on, thus supplying current to its collector. When connected in a suitable circuit, the current provided can be used to turn on other switching components.
