Thyristors are a type of solid-state semiconductor switch which controls and regulates the flow of electricity. The TMA164S-L is a TRIAC (Triode for Alternating Current), which is a three-terminal device ideally suited for AC applications. It is commonly used in circuit architectures such as lighting dimmers, motor speed control, home appliances, heating controls and AC power control.

The TMA164S-L is a bidirectional device with two sets of three terminals. It is a special two-quadrant device, meaning it can control current from either direction. One set of terminals is referred to as “main”, and the other as “auxiliary”. The main terminals are the larger, thicker ones and are used to control the current flow. The auxiliary terminals are the slimmer, narrower pieces and primarily used for grounding the device or for connecting neutral or ground connections.

The TRIAC works by applying a small gate current (G) to the main terminals to control the conduction path between the main terminals. If the gate current is above the minimum threshold (Igt), the TRIAC switches on and begins to conduct current through it. The device remains on until the gate current falls below a lower threshold (Igt) and then it switches off again.

To make the TRIAC operate only in one direction (for example, current flowing only one way), a component such as a diode can be used in combination with the TRIAC. Diodes are devices that allow current to flow in only one direction and are used to block the flow of current from the opposite direction.

When a TRIAC is triggered, it snaps into conduction and begins to conduct current. This “snap-on” feature is one of the key advantages of TRIACs. This allows the TRIACs to be used in circuits that require precise control of the current flow, such as dimmers and motor control applications. The device can be designed to provide precise control over the current flow, as well as the amount of power delivered.

The TMA164S-L device is also capable of dissipating more power than other types of TRIACs, making it suitable for use in more demanding applications. It has a maximum on-state power dissipation of 33W at an ambient temperature of 125°C. The device includes an integrated thermal protection system which prevents excessive heating of the device.

The TMA164S-L is widely used in a variety of applications, including lighting dimming, motor speed control, home appliances, and heating controls.
