Thyristors are a special class of electronic components, used for both static switching and continuous current applications. The three most common thyristor types are DIACs, SIDACs, and TMMDB3. All three share a similar function and can be used for the same applications, but the exact operations vary significantly.
DIACs, or diode-controlled rectifiers, are commonly used in AC power systems and other industrial applications where they are required to switch rapidly. They are triggered when the applied voltage reaches a specific threshold. The DIAC is then capable of carrying current until the voltage drops below its threshold, at which point the thyristor will turn off and begin to reset itself. This makes it ideal for applications requiring short current pulses, such as for rectifying AC power, switching transistors, or for motor control.
SIDACs, or static induction diode-controlled rectifiers, have higher current carrying capabilities than DIACs. They work in much the same way; they are triggered when the voltage exceeds their threshold, allowing current flow until the voltage drops below the threshold. This makes them ideal for applications where large current flows are often needed, such as in welding or heavy duty light dimmer designs.
The TMMDB3, or thyristor module with multiple double-break contacts, is the newest type of thyristor available. It offers a combination of diode and thyristor technology in a module that can be used for switching applications requiring high speed and high current carrying capability. The TMMDB3 offers a unique control function; it is triggered by recognizing either a positive or negative polarity before activating the thyristor. This makes it an ideal solution for applications in which multiple switches need to be operated with the same speed and accuracy. Typical applications for the TMMDB3 include high-frequency motor speed control, motorized gate and door actuators, relays, and other switching operations in which high current carrying requirements must be met.
In all three types of thyristors, the working principle behind them is the same. When the applied voltage exceeds a certain threshold, the thyristor turns on and begins conducting current. If the voltage drops to a lower threshold, the thyristor turns off. In the case of the TMMDB3, it is capable of recognizing two different polarities, allowing control over two separate switches in the same module. This makes it ideal for applications requiring high current carrying capability and rapid switching, such as in motor control.
DIACs, SIDACs, and TMMDB3s are all essential elements of power control and switching applications. In each case, the thyristor works in the same way; when a voltage threshold is exceeded, the thyristor turns on and, upon reaching another threshold, the thyristor off. The three types are suited for different applications, with the TMMDB3 offering the unique ability to control two switches within the same module.
