Working Principle of the TMP411/TMP411A

The TMP411/TMP411A is a high precision and accurate temperature sensor with a wide operating temperature range from -40°C to 125°C. The device uses a thermistor and a proprietary algorithm to measure temperature with high accuracy and precision. The thermistor operates by utilizing the fact that resistances value decreases with increase in temperature. The thermistor is connected to an input pin of the IC and is powered by a constant current source. This current source is connected to the thermistor and is regulated by an internal voltage reference. When a temperature differential is presented, with the surrounding environment, temperature resistance of the thermistor varies, thus changing the overall resistance. The varying resistance causes a change in the amplifier output current, which is measured by the integrated circuit and read by the ADC on the IC.

The TMP411/TMP411A has two operating modes, single-shot mode and continuous mode. In single-shot mode, the output is only updated when a measurement is triggered, usually through a request from a processor. In continuous mode, the output is updated continuously providing a series of temperature measurements. The measured temperature is transmitted via a serial communications interface. The communications interface is SPI/QSPI compatible or I2C/SMBus compatible.

The TMP411/TMP411A also has an integrated temperature reference source that provides a low offset temperature measurement of +7 °C. The reference source can be set at any temperature from -5 °C to +50 °C and is used to correct any temperature measurements that may be outside the operating range of the device.

The TMP411/TMP411A provides accurate and reliable temperature response with high precision. The on-chip temperature sensor has a 0.1 °C accuracy (from 0 °C to + 85 °C) and maintains a maximum measurement error of 0.25 °C (at +25 °C).
