It utilizes a combination of detection circuits and control logic to safely manage the power going into the device. When a system is powered up, the power rails of the TPS2331ID exist in a high-impedance state and no current is drawn until the device is enabled by a signal from the control pin. Once enabled, the Hot Swap controller enters a low-impedance state and current is allowed to flow from the input source to the protected device. The TPS2331ID monitors the current and prevents it from exceeding the programmed current limit level. If the current limit level is exceeded, the controller shuts down and the protected device is disconnected from the input source. The TPS2331ID also incorporates a voltage-controlled power-down feature that automatically powers down the protected device if the input voltage is below a programmed threshold. This feature prevents inrush current that could otherwise damage the system. Additionally, the thermal foldback and shutdown protection of the TPS2331ID protect the system from overheating by monitoring the temperature of the device and shutting it down if it exceeds a predetermined temperature.
