Introduction: The TPS2363PFB is a user-configurable hot swap controller with integrated gate driver, enabling low-cost, low external component count solutions for several hot swap applications. The integrated gate driver allows for enhanced system protection and control of the voltage across the hot swap path. In order to protect itself from any potential overload conditions, the device is self-protected from high voltage, high current, and over temperature. This document describes the application field and working principle of the TPS2363PFB.

Application Field: The TPS2363PFB is a versatile hot swap controller, and is commonly used in distributed power systems. It is suitable for various systems, ranging from 3.2V to 36V, but the most common usage is in systems with 5V and 12V input voltage. Typical applications include VMEbus, Compact PCI, PMC, 1-Wire, and optical switches.

The main benefits of the TPS2363PFB hot swap controller are its adjustable current limit, adjustable voltage limit and over-temperature protection. This device provides system designers with the flexibility to optimize the hot swap design and fit the target application.The adjustable current limit and the adjustable voltage limit (on some applications) provide a tunable solution for any hot swap application where the output requirements have to be constrained due to board space considerations. In addition, the adjustable current and voltage limit enable improved system performance when lower current and voltage conditions are needed.The TPS2363PFB also features an integrated gate driver which provides a fast, yet cost-effective solution for hot swap applications. This integrated gate driver simplifies system designs, improves the protection and control of the hot swap path, and reduces external component count.

Working Principle: The functional block diagram of the TPS2363PFB hot swap controller is shown in Figure 1. The device includes a power up/down control logic and a power device gate driver circuit. The power up/down control logic consists of a current limit and voltage limit circuit, an enable/disable circuit, and an enable/disable circuit for over-temperature protection.

The TPS2363PFB features an adjustable current limit and voltage limit circuit, with each limit being independently programmable. The current limit is programmed with a single resistor, while the voltage limit is adjustable using two resistors. When the load current approaches the selected limit or when the output voltage rises above the limit, the TPS2363PFB will shut off the output, protecting the system from excessive current or too high of a voltage.

The TPS2363PFB is equipped with an over-temperature protection (OTP) circuit, which shuts down the control logic when the temperature reaches a pre-programmed limit, protecting both the device and the system. The device can be re-enabled when the system cools down.

The TPS2363PFB is designed to protect the system from high voltage and high current conditions, and with its integrated gate driver it allows for enhanced system protection and control of the voltage across the hot swap path. This device provides system designers with the flexibility to optimize the hot swap design, enabling lower cost and lower external component count solutions.
