The TPS40132RHBR is a high-efficiency, step-down DC/DC switching controller that operates from a wide input voltage range of 8V to 65V. It also provides excellent line and load transient response, minimizing output voltage ripple and ringing. The device is controlled by its wide input voltage from an internal 2kHz fixed frequency oscillator. The device integrates an output low-side power transistor for synchronous rectification and includes two-level sensing for improved system performance.

In terms of application field, the device is applicable for automotive, industrial and general-purpose applications, like on-board chargers and power supplies, HID lamps, motor drives and industrial lighting. It also features wide load-step transients and uses a regulated current-mode control loop to reduce output voltage ripple below 10mV. The device features an adjustable soft-start to limit inrush currents at start-up, as well as an adjustable frequency setting that allows you to optimize the system design for empty load efficiency.

The working principle of the TPS40132RHBR is that when an enable voltage greater than 1.2V is applied to the EN pin, an enable voltage and shutdown logic circuit is activated and outputs a logic high disabling the oscillator. The internal oscillator produces a pulse width modulated (PWM) waveform having a pulse width proportional to the voltage difference between the COMP pin and the FB pin. As a result, the device regulates the output voltage and can be programmed for different voltages by adjusting the COMP or FB pin voltage. When the voltage at FB exceeds the voltage at the COMP pin, the output voltage of the PWM decreases. Conversely, when the voltage at FB is less than the voltage at the COMP pin, the output voltage of the PWM increases.

The device has an internal current sink to sense the output current along with the internal output-side power transistor allows the device to maintain a fixed output voltage over a wide range of output current while providing very low output voltage ripple. The primary feature of the device are: 8V-65V input voltage range; Automatic Power-On Reset (POR) diodes; Adjustable power-on time; Programmable switching frequency; Programmable external soft-start; and Active current-sense circuit. The TPS40132RHBR has proven itself to be a very efficient and reliable voltage regulator with excellent load- and line-transient response.
