TPS40303DRCR is a fully integrated switching-mode DC-DC voltage regulator with a 4.5V to 18V input voltage range, specifically designed for non-isolated point-of-load step-down conversion. This product takes full advantage of the latest technologies to combine wide input and output ranges with low component count, small size and low cost. The device is designed to provide up to 1.8A of continuous output current, adjustable from 0.90V to 5V.Features of this device include an adjustable current limit, Under Voltage Lockout (UVLO), and programmable Soft-Start. Additionally, the device offers an option to use an external resistor to reduce the size of the output capacitor for light load efficiency.
The TPS40303DRCR is an ideal solution for powering load current, like CPUs, DSPs and FPGAs, in applications such as network switches, communications equipment, and RAIDs. The wide input and output voltage range, precise programmability and low component count make the device well suited for non-isolated point-of-load step-down applications.
The TPS40303DRCR features all the features necessary to start up a DC-DC converter and provide a fatigue-resistant solution. Coming with an adjustable-current-limit (ACL),the device can handle output open or short-circuit conditions while the built-in programmable Soft-Start function eliminates the need for output capacitors on the secondary side. The device also features an internal Under Voltage Lockout (UVLO) to prevent damaging under voltage conditions.
The TPS40303DRCR works in a synchronous buck mode, allowing for a maximum conversion efficiency of up to 90% over a wide input and output voltage range. The device comes in two different packages types – the 5-lead SOT23-5 and the 6-lead VSSOP-6 packages. The power train consists of two high-side switches (PMOS) connected in a “half-bridge” configuration. The two switches can be independently operated in either continuous or pulse-width modulation (PWM) mode. There are two low-side switches; one switch is controlled by an external reference voltage and one is used to control the output voltage.
The output voltage of the TPS40303DRCR is set using an external feedback network which consists of two resistors selected to form a voltage divider at the FB pin. The output voltage can be adjusted from 0.90V to 5V in 12mV steps. The voltage across each of the two resistors is detected by an internal voltage comparator and used to control the switching frequency to maintain the programmed output voltage. An internal oscillator frequency is compared with this feedback voltage to maintain the output voltage within the set parameters. The oscillator frequency can be programmed using an external resistor and the on-chip clock divider.
The TPS40303DRCR also features a built-in soft-start circuitry that provides a gradual increase in output voltage as the power supply is enabled. This allows for a steady and smooth power up process, eliminating the possibility of current spikes and unnecessary drain on the output capacitor. On the other hand, the device features an adjustable soft-stop function which slows down the output voltage decay rate when the device is being disabled, so that the output capacitor will not be quickly discharged.
In addition to the above features, the TPS40303DRCR also offers a wide variety of protection features such as Under Voltage Lockout (UVLO), Over Voltage Lockout (OVLO), Over Current Protection (OCP) and Thermal Shutdown (TSD). All these features make the device highly reliable, and capable of handling transient load conditions with ease.
