Working Principle

The TPS40490MHRHDT is a monolithic DC-DC switching regulator featuring current modes control that uses an external timing resistor, RT, and an external synchronous MOSFET. It has an operating input voltage range of – 2.7V to 12.6V and the output voltage is adjustable from 0.6V to 5.5V. The TPS40490MHRHDT includes thermal shutdown which de-activates the switch MOSFET to protect the device during excessive device temperature. It also has a pulse-by-pulse current limit feature which limits the control-side power MOSFET current each cycle. The current limit level is set by the external resistor, RC, connected to the CL pin. The TPS40490MHRHDT also has an internal high voltage referenced low-side switch driver which is activated by the ENABLE pin. When the ENABLE pin is low, the regulator will be turned off and the Low state output voltage will be 0.2V. The TPS40490MHRHDT utilizes a differential current sensing amplifier to maintain a minimum load of 2.5mA. A minimum Vref of 0.3V is required at the VREF pin for proper operation. The load fold-back and dynamic peak current control ensures optimized efficiency for a wide range of loads. The TPS40490MHRHDT uses a logic controlled output voltage disable feature which can be used to turn off the regulator to reduce power loss during periods of inactivity. The output voltage is disabled when the VDDVIO pin is driven to ground. The TPS40490MHRHDT utilizes an adjustable soft-start feature to prevent the output voltage from overshooting during start-up. The soft-start duration can be programmed with the external adjustable resistor, RSS, connected to the SS pin.
