TPS51117RGYRG4 is a step-down DC-DC switching controller optimized for industrial applications. It operates from an input voltage range of 4.5V to 15V and provides efficient voltage regulator output of 1.0V to 5.5V. It contains an integrated low side switch, which minimizes external components, and is capable of controlling external N-channel MOSFETs for step-down applications up to 8A. The internal oscillator frequency can be up to 2MHz. It also features short circuit, over temperature and peak current protections.
The TPS51117RGYRG4 can provide an output voltage smaller than 0.6V. By setting the SYNC pin to ground, the user can synchronize the switching frequency with an external clock up to 2.5MHz. The device features both Cycle-by-Cycle Current Limit and Adjustable Reset Comparator. The Cycle-by-Cycle Current Limit functions continuously and latches the power MOSFET off when the over current condition is met, while the adjustable reset comparator shuts off the power MOSFET at an adjustable indicating signal below the power-on level (when a comparator level value is set to 0.2V).
The TPS51117RGYRG4 is suitable for a wide variety of industrial applications such as alarm systems, telecom, servers, medical systems and automotive infotaintment. Thanks to its high efficiency and low quiescent current, it is especially suitable for battery powered applications such as portable radios and GPS systems. In most power applications, the TPS51117RGYRG4 can be used to reduce the number of common circuit elements, effectively reducing costs and saving board space.
The TPS51117RGYRG4 works based on the circuit diagram shown in Figure 1. In the steady state, the MOSFET is ON, and the inductor receives power from the supply, which induces a voltage across the inductor. As the voltage builds up, the voltage across the current sense resistor (RS) increases, and the Control Circuit detects this increase and shuts off the MOSFET. This causes the magnetizing current to decline, until the voltage across the inductor is equal to the voltage of the FB pin.
When the MOSFET shuts off, the current flow is reversed, and the magnetic field in the inductor induces a negative voltage, which causes the power switch to be disconnected from the voltage supply and reduces the current, until it reaches the current limit threshold. At this point, the Control Circuit senses the power drop and resets the MOSFET to its ON state, where the current again builds up. The cycle repeats, and the output voltage is regulated to the FB pin voltage level.
The TPS51117RGYRG4 combines excellent features and performance in a single package, making it an ideal choice for a variety of applications. With its high efficiency and low quiescent current, it is especially suitable for battery powered applications such as portable radios and GPS systems. The integrated current limit and adjustable reset comparator provide reliable and robust protection.
