TPS56100PWP Application Field and Working Principle

The PMIC (Power Management IC) voltage regulator known as TPS56100PWP is a special purpose power management and protection integrated circuit that offers superior performance and accuracy even in highly dynamic electricity conditions. This voltage regulator works in the range of 4.5V-28V and is designed for a broad array of applications like boats, RV’s, and other applications monitoring VCORE for systems powered by 12V, 24V, and 28V batteries. It is a 6-pin device that allows for a wide range of voltage control.

The TPS56100PWP is designed to withstand wide transients that solve issues caused by ordinary regulators in these applications. The device allows for an output voltage of up to 28V, and a wide input voltage range of 4.5V to 28V. It consists of an oscillator, a voltage reference, a PWM controller and a power FET

Working Principle

The oscillator generates a fixed frequency clock and is independent of the input voltage. So, even when the input voltage is varying the oscillator maintains a fixed frequency. The internal control loop operates at the 40MHz oscillator frequency by adjustable hysteresis magnitude guarantees an accuracy of +/- 0.5%.

An external resistive divider is used to provide a feedback voltage to the PWM controller. The selection of the resistive divider and the PWM controller, along with the gate drive of the power FET, allows for regulation of the output voltage within a specified accuracy range to the programmed output voltage.

Finally the FET subsequently handles the power regulation. The 5th pin (VMT control voltage pin) is a voltage control pin that allows for precise, active D-Conduction trade off control of the power FET. This monitors the switching FET temperature and frees the user from manual adjustment, as the temperature control loop adjusts the RDS (on) automatically to maintain the VMT pin at 0.85V.
