Working Principle

The TPS65720YFFT has four main components: high-efficiency step-down converters, dual LDOs, 2-cell Li-ion battery charger and an adjustable output voltage tracking circuit. The step-down converters are designed to step down the incoming supply voltage to the desired output voltage. The converters operate in the constant on-time (COT) mode which allows for a fast transient response. They have peak output current capability of up to 8A, ensuring improved line and load transients with low output voltage ripple and low power dissipation. The dual LDO are used to regulate the output voltages of 1.8V (VREG1) and 3.3V (VREG2) with maximum 2A and 1A load current respectively. The LDO has low output noise, low ground currents and low quiescent power consumption with a very stable line and load regulation. The 2-cell Li-ion battery charger is designed to charge the battery cells to their safe charge voltage. It employs a two-level constant-current / constant-voltage (CC/CV) charging method, accurately controlling the charge voltage and current. Furthermore, it has low battery shutdown and repeated battery insertion monitoring, to protect the battery and prevent it from overcharging. The adjustable output voltage tracking circuit allows the output voltage of the step-down converters to be margined and tracked, ensuring that all the output voltages are accurately adjusted to the desired values.
