TRF3750IPWR is a high-performance, high-resolution step-synthesizer die from Texas Instruments that uses fractional-N frequency synthesis. This frequency synthesis solution provides extremely accurate and reliable programming of a wide frequency output in a compact 4mm x 4mm package making it ideal for applications requiring a frequency range of 10 MHz to 4GHz. Typically the synthesizer will be used in cellular base station RF applications but also in satellite or microwave radio applications as well.
The TRF3750IPWR uses preset sub-range dividers, a frequency synthesizer and a voltage-controlled oscillator (VCO) to achieve a wide frequency tuning range. The broad range is divided into 10 discrete sub-range frequencies, designated 0 through 9, with a maximum programmed output frequency of 4GHz. A user-defined modulation input allows the output to be changed by an external digital or analog signal.
When using the TRF3750IPWR, an external clock source is used to drive the VCO, typically in the range of 10MHz to 20MHz. The VCO output is then divided by the pre-programmed divider sub-range, providing an accurate output frequency that is adjustable within the range of the sub-range for fine-tuning. The frequency can also be further adjusted by modulating the VCO output through an external signal. The output frequency is selected by programming the locking register pins.
The TRF3750IPWR provides excellent frequency accuracy and stability while operating over the specified temperature range. Typical applications include ultra-low jitter clocks, reference clocks, broadcast radio, satellite and microwave radio, as well as base station radio applications. This is accomplished through the use of fractional-N frequency synthesizer technology, a wide output frequency range, and high-precision programming capability.
The TRF3750IPWR is constructed in a 4mm x 4mm QFN package and is powered by a +2.7V to +4.6V DC supply. The frequency accuracy of this unit outperforms traditional integer-N frequency synthesizers in the same output frequency range. This is due to the addition of the fractional-N scheme, which provides excellent frequency resolution, precision and stability.
