The TRF3761 BIRHAR (Ballast Independent Remote-Frequency-Hopping Apparatus Radio) is one of the most advanced clock generators, PLLs (phase-locked loops) and frequency synthesizers in the clock/timing field. Built by Texas Instruments and having a three-stage architecture, the TRF3761 is used in medical, industrial, instrumentation, and scientific applications, from small handheld devices to extremely large systems.The architecture of the TRF3761 features a set of logic to reconcile the Reference Clock and Modulation Clock in an instantaneous manner, ensuring harmonic operation and superior performance. The architecture is also designed to enable synchronized time-of-flight communications without slave device drift from the master device. An added benefit is that the device can be operated in a wide range of temperatures, making it suitable for a range of environments.The fundamental working principles of the TRF3761 involve the synchronization of an incoming Reference Clock signal with an outgoing Modulation Clock signal, which is precisely kept in step with the Reference Clock by a ‘transparent clock’. The Reference Clock signal is divided down by an internal divider, while the output of the divider is combined with alternate modulation clock signals fed into a mixer within the PLLs.The mixer then combines the two signals and outputs one to the output clock, allowing the Modulation Clock to be maintained in step with the Reference Clock. The clock is then used as the output of a local oscillator that uses an external PLL or frequency synthesizer to generate higher frequency signals for clock generation and/or communication.As mentioned, one of the advantages of the TRF3761 is its wide temperature range operation. The device is capable of operating from -40°C to +105°C and can accommodate more than a twenty percent difference in clock frequency. This provides the user with added assurance that the device will continue to perform even in the most demanding of environments.In addition to the wide range of operation, the TRF3761 is designed with a “single-component” architecture, for ease of integration into existing systems. This ensures reliable integration with surrounding components and systems. In addition, the device is available in both 3.3-volt and 5-volt versions and is also RoHS compliant.All of these features make the TRF3761-BIRHAR one of the most advanced clock/timing devices available on the market today. It can be used to design sophisticated clock circuits, and its integration into existing systems is straightforward. Its reliability, temperature range operation and RoHS compliance make it ideal for a variety of applications.
