TRF7963RHBR is an integrated circuit designed for use in RFID and near field communication (NFC) applications. It is a member of Texas Instruments’ family of Radio Frequency Access and Monitoring Integrated Circuits (RFAM ICs).

The TRF7963RHBR is designed to simplify compliance with most RFAP (Radio Frequency Access Protocol) operations and particular RFAP standard implementations, including ISO14443A, ISO15693 and ISO18092/NFCIP-1. Its role as a Reader IC helps to reduce design complexity.

The TRF7963RHBR provides precise control of both antennas in use, offering the flexibility to switch between multiple antenna designs. Its antenna diversity capability improves communication reliability and robustness in applications such as NFC tags and cards that move during communication.

The TRF7963RHBR’s internal system block diagram is shown in Figure 1. It includes a dual RF power amplifier, an automatic gain control (AGC) circuit, and an analog-to-digital converter. The dual-channel power amplifiers provide power output up to +30 dBm. The AGC circuit automatically adjusts the input levels of the amplifiers, allowing for maximum data rate and communication range. The integrated A/D converter is used to measure and sample the waveforms and other system parameters.

The TRF7963RHBR has multiple configurable I/O options, including interrupt control, analog and digital I/O. The interrupt control scheme allows the TRF7963RHBR to pass communication errors to the microcontroller. The onboard analog and digital I/O options can be used to debug RF signal quality and other system parameters.

The TRF7963RHBR also supports data rates up to 8 Mbps. In addition, it offers programmable timing generator, to support multiple RFID protocols. It has the ability to support both half-duplex and full-duplex communication, enabling adaptation to many different wireless protocols.
