RF Receivers

The TRF7900PWRG4, from Texas Instruments, is a multi-protocol, integrated RF receiver that is aimed at low-power, low-cost and low-footprint solutions. It is a versatile, high-performance RF receiver solution which supports a wide range of protocols including Bluetooth low energy, NFC, Zigbee, WLAN, and many others. The TRF7900PWRG4 can be used in a variety of applications from consumer electronics to industrial, automotive and medical applications.

The TRF7900PWRG4 is a half-duplex receiver which contains a single radio chain and implements frequency-hopping spread-spectrum (FSKs) and direct-sequence spread-spectrum (DSSS) protocols. The receiver uses direct down-conversion architecture with an integrated low-noise amplifier and voltage controlled oscillator (VCO). This architecture allows for the receiver to have a fast time-to-acquisition and a low-noise figure which leads to a better signal-to-noise ratio.

The TRF7900PWRG4 is based on an architecture which maximizes the receiver’s range and minimizes the current consumption. This architecture includes a main receiver digital baseband, a receiver digital front-end, an analog front-end, and a voltage-controlled oscillator (VCO). The receiver digital front-end supports up to 8 channels of frequency hopping (FHSS) or up to 8 channels of direct sequence spread spectrum (DSSS) operation. The analog front-end provides filtering, frequency translation, and amplitude control. The voltage-controlled oscillator (VCO) is used to generate the local oscillator (LO) frequency for the receiver. The TRF7900PWRG4 also includes a USB interface for programming the receiver.

For Bluetooth low energy and NFC applications, the TRF7900PWRG4 provides support for up to 32-bit data packet with a maximum packet rate of 10 Mbps. For Zigbee applications, the TRF7900PWRG4 supports a packet rate of up to 8 Mbps and a maximum packet size of 256-bit. For WLAN applications, the receiver provides support for data rates up to 54 Mbps with a packet size of up to 256. The receiver also includes DPDT radio frequency switches, an antenna diversity switch, an output LNA match circuit, and an LED power source.

In addition to its features, the TRF7900PWRG4 also offers a wide range of application-specific features which include a programmable wake-up timer, an adjustable output antenna gain control, a quick start-up mode, an adaptive performance mode, and a frequency hopping profile manager. The TRF7900PWRG4 also offers configurable interrupt levels and supports low-power modes such as sleep mode and wake-up mode.
