Aluminum electrolytic capacitors are polarized capacitors with two terminals that usually consist of a metal lid and an aluminum oxide layer. They are the mainstay component in modern electronics, providing buffering, filtering and de-coupling between circuits. Typically, the aluminum electrolytic capacitors provide extremely high capacitances within a specific size range.

The TVA1440 is an adjustable voltage aluminum electrolytic capacitor designed to be integrated into a variety of electronic applications, including medical equipment, consumer electronics, communication systems, and space and military use. It is a modified radial lead capacitor with a threaded sleeve for adjusting its cold voltage rating by turning the internal screw adjusting mechanism. Features include a snap-in mounting system for secure installation, wide temperature range, and low ESR. With its adjustable center terminal, it is also unique as the only adjustable capacitor for non-isolated lateral applications.

The TVA1440 is composed of a cylinder-shaped capacitor shell in which the internal structure is covered by a film of aluminum oxide. Inside, the structure consists of two electrodes: a positive plate, made of aluminum-basis foil, and a negative cylinder-shaped plate (also called the cathode), which is either an anode foil or a carbon-impregnated paper. Between the plates there is a separator, usually made of cellulose-based paper, coated with a special resin to increase its electrolytic resistance. The space between positive and negative plates is filled with an electrolytic solution composed of sulfuric acid.

The working principle of the TVA1440 relies on the combination of anode and cathode plates separated by a separator and the electrolytic solution. When the capacitor is connected to the power supply, the capacitor starts to charge. When the capacitor is connected, an electric field is crossed between the anode and the cathode, creating an ionic current and a direction of charge. As the capacitor charges, electrolyte ions from the electrolytic solution become polarised and move to the anode and cathode. The electrolyte ions which accumulated on the anode form an artificial oxide layer. This layer works as a dielectric and stores electrical charge. Therefore, the capacitor begins to store electrical energy at this point. This energy is stored as chemical energy within the electrolyte and will be released when the capacitor is discharged.

As the capacitor approaches its maximum capacitance, the electric field reaches a maximum that is determined by the breakdown voltage of the dielectric layer. Once the capacitor is discharged, it begins to function in reverse, releasing the stored electrical energy, and the ions of the electrolyte move towards the cathode. Consequently, the electric field decreases and the capacitor begins to charge again. This process of charging and discharging continues, ensuring the functionality of the capacitor.

The unique adjustable center terminal of the TVA1440 makes it suitable for application in non-isolated lateral technologies, allowing users to reduce the voltage, prevent any risk of overvoltage and protect the component of their electronic system from damage. This adjustable terminal also provides a high level of flexibility to meet the requirements of different electronic systems.
