TVS - Diodes

TVS (Transient Voltage Suppressors) diodes are semiconductor devices specially designed to protect vulnerable electronics components from electrical overstress. They are designed to clamp down transient voltage surges such as those caused by lightning, inductive switching (relays, solenoids and motors), electrostatic discharge (ESD), and power cross surges. In general, TVS diodes acts similarly to an Zener diode, however TVS Diodes are much faster acting and can handle greater power dissipation.

TVS 512SM Application Field and Working Principle

The TVS 512SM is an advanced TVS diode particularly designed for the protection of high voltage systems. It is particularly useful in protecting breakthrough power architectures and its high voltage rating makes it suitable for use in automotive, industrial and lighting systems. The 512SM comes with built-in EMI (electromagnetic interference) filter technology and a thermally balanced single component that provides mechanical stability, insertion loss and EMI suppression.

The working principle of the TVS 512SM is based on its ability to function as a junction diode. When the voltage exceeds the rated peak power, the diode starts to conduct and clamps down the excess voltage to a safe level. The junction diode acts like a voltage controlled resistor, with the conduction current determined by the peak voltage. The 512SM can handle extremely high transient voltages up to 1200V (peak pulse power of 15kV).

The TVS 512SM also provides differential mode protection. This protection is useful for online intermittent failures which cannot be detected by common ESD protection. The 512SM is able to detect and suppress such transient events either through its EMI filter or its self-triggering failure detection.

The 512SM is also able to provide transient overvoltage protection for a wide variety of applications. Its peak pulse power rating of 15kV and its wide operating temperature range of -40°C to +125°C make it suitable for applications such as railway, marine, off-road vehicles, telecom, medical, industrial and consumer electronics.

In addition, the TVS 512SM provides improved signal integrity performance due to its electrically balanced single component design which eliminates any potential interference from design changes to the PCB and its components. This single component solution also ensures minimal insertion loss, which helps reduce the energy loss in the system.
