TVS - Diodes: TVS528SM application field and working principle
TVS Diodes, otherwise known as Transient Voltage Suppressors (also known as Transil or Trisil Diodes), are electronic devices in the form of diodes designed to protect electronics from overvoltage and ESD (electrostatic discharge) transients. TVS Diodes are frequently used in automotive, avionic and power electronics applications.
TVS528SM is a miniaturized unidirectional (also known as unilateral, unipolar or bidirectional) transient voltage suppressor (TVS). It offers excellent clamping performance and is well-suited for the protection of sensitive electronics from transients induced by lightning and other voltage spikes.

Working Principle
In operation, TVS528SM functions in a similar manner to a Zener diode in that the device conducts when the voltage reaches its breakdown voltage. At this time, the device turns on and begins to conduct current, limiting the voltage to a safe level. The device is designed to handle reverse current in a non-destructive fashion, meaning that the device will limit the voltage but maintain its state when the current is reversed. This makes the device suitable for preventing overvoltage transients, such as those induced by lightning strikes.
The device also has a robust ESD protection mechanism that is designed to withstand multiple ESD events without degradation. Additionally, TVS528SM also has an over voltage protection (OVP) and over current protection (OCP) mechanism that prevents the device from damaging circuitry and other devices when a large amount of current is applied or the device is exposed to high voltages.
TVS528SM combines low-current technology and clamping technology to provide ESD and overvoltage protection. During an overvoltage event, the device functions as a Zener diode, producing a current-limiting effect by diverting current from the protected circuit to a ‘safe’ location, thus preventing damage. During an ESD event, the device functions as a capacitor, storing and dissipating the charge rapidly via its low leakage current.
