Diodes - Zener - SingleThe TZMA18-GS08 is a general-purpose zener diode, intended to provide voltage regulation in power supplies and other applications which require a stable voltage reference. It can be operated either in the forward-bias or reverse-bias conduction modes, and it is capable of regulating currents of up to 500mA.The TZMA18-GS08 is constructed from a silicon semiconductor material and features a low-forward voltage drop and a low leakage current, making it highly reliable and suitable for a variety of applications. It has a maximum reverse voltage of 18V, with a nominal breakdown voltage of 17.4V, which is the voltage at which the diode begins to conduct in reverse-bias operation.In applications where a stable reference voltage is required, the TZMA18-GS08 can be used to regulate the voltage by providing a resistive-type of voltage control. This is achieved by connecting the diode in series with the load and controlling its forward-biased voltage drop. When the voltage across the load increases, the current passing through the diode increases as well, which results in an increase in the voltage drop across the diode, thus maintaining a stable reference voltage.In applications requiring reverse-biased conduction, such as Zener Diode Voltage Regulators (ZDVRs), the TZMA18-GS08 can be used. In this case, the diode is arranged in series with a voltage divider, the potential of the divider being adjusted with the breakdown voltage of the diode. As the supply voltage increases, the voltage across the divider decreases, thus reducing the current passing through the diode and resulting in a steady regulated voltage. This type of application requires an external current limiting device.Furthermore, the TZMA18-GS08 can also be employed as an overload protection device, known as a crowbar circuit. In this circuit, the diode is placed across the load, with its anode towards the supply and its cathode towards the load. When the load current exceeds a predetermined threshold, the diode quickly begins to conduct, diverting the current away from the load. This prevents the device or circuit from being damaged due to excessive current.Lastly, the TZMA18-GS08 can also be used in transient voltage suppression (TVS) circuits, which are designed to protect sensitive electronic equipment from transient voltages. Typically, the diode is connected across the load in such a way that it becomes forward-biased during voltage transients, or when the voltage exceeds a specified threshold. The TZMA18-GS08 absorbs the transient energy, thus providing an effective protection against over-voltage conditions.The TZMA18-GS08 is a widely used device in a variety of circuits and applications, owing to its low leakage and low-forward voltage drop.
