Application Field

UA78L15ACLPRE3 voltage regulator is usually applicable in power management systems. Working Principle

The basic circuitry of a linear voltage regulator is formed around two voltage-determining elements; an active element like a transistor, and a passive element such as a resistor or a capacitor. The passive element works as a potential divider that divides the input voltage into two parts; one part to be used at the base of the active element, and the other part to supply the output voltage needed. When the regulator is set to a regulated output voltage, the voltage drop across the device is referred to as the ‘Dropout Voltage’.

The core of the UA78L15ACLPRE3 consists of a low-dropout series regulator equipped with a direction sense transistor and a Band Gap reference so as to control the output voltage. It is enabled by the current flowing through a control section, which includes a pair of opposing transistors and resistor. This enable current is enabled by the flowing through the output current, thereby providing additional stability. A thermal protection circuit is provided to protect the device from excessive temperature rises.

In addition to supplying the constant output voltage, the UA78L15ACLPRE3 has a resistor-trimmed feature that allows the user to precisely adjust the output voltage ratio. This is done by connecting a low-value resistor between the device’s output voltage and ground. The output voltage is lower than the input voltage due to the voltage drop across the device and this is compensated by increasing the output voltage ratio. Once the resistor-trimmed feature is properly set, the output voltage will remain constant, irrespective of the voltage fluctuations in the input supply.

The UA78L15ACLPRE3 is available in two packages; through-hole and surface-mount. Both of these packages are compatible with a variety of PCB assemblies such as Double-Sided, Single-Sided and Multi-Layer boards. It is also RoHS compliant, making it suitable for a multitude of applications.
