UC2852D is a monolithic power factor correction (PFC) integrated circuit dedicated to boost topologies applications in multiple switch-mode converter architectures. It is designed to implement a wide variety of PFC algorithms and boost architectures. This paper aims at introducing a novel and important application field of UC2852D and how does it work.
Developed in advanced CMOS process with LDMOS, the UC2852D is suitable for high power applications, mostly in the high power electrical and electronic industry, like AC-AC converters, LED drivers, AC-DC converters and more. With small PCB size, this part combines the power factor correction loop functions, LED driving independent of line voltage, line and load regulation loop, brown-in/out functions, and integrated protection and diagnostic functions.
The IC is designed for operating with almost all types of switches: thyristors, IGBTs, or even MOSFETs. In addition, the UC2852D integrates a number of features typically performed by separate circuits, and offers a wide range of features for generic AC to DC, DC to DC, or AC to AC PFC converters, thus minimizing the external components (e.g.: opto-couplers, zener diodes, etc.).
The UC2852D brings together multiple functions in a single package. First and foremost, it includes an open output Rectifier which accurately amplifies and rectifies the mains voltage, which at this way achieves a power factor higher than 0.8 and THD lower than 10%. To make sure that the output waveforms are not distorted, UC2852D provides an excellent ripple along the output voltage waveforms, allowing the equal of switching frequency and waveform amplitude.
Another important feature provided by UC2852D is that it contains an efficient line voltage sense input circuit. This voltage sense input verifies the line voltage when it reaches a specific level, for example during startup. Furthermore, the UC2852D integrates an isolated single-ended flyback sensing circuit. This sensing circuit will help the power factor correction loop to track the output voltage as accurately as possible.
Lastly, the IC can also be used for DC to DC converter applications. Specifically, when it is being used as an isolated DC to DC converter, the IC will measure the load current and actively control it, as well as providing constant current and constant voltage output characteristics.
