Power factor correction (PFC) is an electronic technique used to increase the power quality of an electrical system. The device designed for this purpose is called as power factor corrector (PFC). The UC2854ADWTRG4 is a high performance general purpose PFC controller specifically designed for the single ended forward converter applications such as PFC pre-regulation, high current PFC boost converters, modified sinewave generator, and other off-line power factor correction applications. The IC provides accurate constant peak primary current, adjustable frequency/dither, soft-start/constant peak current limit, programmable peak current limit, short circuit protection, under voltage lockout and is pin and software compatible with equivalent devices. The IC contains an ADJ pin which allows the user to adjust the peak current, frequency. Also, the IC contains a synchronous rectifier driver with adjustable linear phase control, an adjustable peak current limit of up to 1.35A and temperature compensation for fast recovery from over-temperature events. The IC also contains a low-side switch to reduce power consumption in Off mode.

The IC also contains three independent control loops: input voltage loop, output voltage loop and peak current loop. The input voltage loop uses a feedback signal from the input voltage peak detector to control the peak current. The output voltage loop uses the output voltage peak detector to control the peak current. The peak current loop uses the current peak detector to control the peak current. The IC also contains a frequency dithering circuit to reduce audible noise and ripple in the input current.

The UC2854ADWTRG4 also has two adjustable control parameters to improve the control performance while maintaining the same power factor. These parameters are peak current limit and frequency dithering. The peak current limit affects the maximum peak current and is set according to the size of the application’s transformer. Frequency dithering increases the efficiency of the power factor correction by reducing the difference between the input and output current ripples, thus reducing the total harmonic distortion for the system.
