UCC2917DTR Application Field and Working Principle of PMIC - Hot Swap Controllers

Hot swap controllers are a type of integrated circuits that are typically used in power distribution systems to manage the power pin-swapping functions, ensuring that they occur safely by implementing different protection features, such as over-voltage protection, over-temperature protection, etc. Hot swap controllers play an important role in protecting the device, system, and personnel when power is connected and disconnected. UCC2917DTR is a hot swap controller developed by Texas Instruments and is part of their PrimeLinx™ Series. It is designed to control power distribution and limiting in high current applications. It offers 825 kHz operation, 16-V die operating temperature rating and 2-A maximum R DS(ON) , which makes it suitable for a wide range of applications. The UCC2917DTR is an integrated power solution for applications such as enterprise-level servers, storage systems, laptops, and industrial motor control applications. The device is designed to provide durability, flexibility, and value to designs that utilize board-level hot swap operations. It monitors input/output voltages to ensure safe power delivery when power is connected or disconnected, and provides precise control to minimize power management footprint and cost. This device uses a combination of control loop and detection logic to manage bottom side FETs. The parts of the control loop include an oscillator, amplifiers, error amplifiers and an active current limiter that monitors the load current entering the load, and then adjusts the FET’s peak current level. The Integrated current limit works with the adjustable slew rate limiters to ensure a benign power-on sequence. The integrated fault detectors detect open switches, overvoltage, and undervoltage conditions, while the integrated fault interrupts protect the device upon a fault. The UCC2917DTR includes a three-mode soft start generator to manage power-up and power-down current controlled slew rate for hot swap applications. The soft start generator measures the capacitor\'s total charge time, converting it into the soft-start delay time. This soft start feature allows designers to reduce the inrush current and alleviate system noise commonly seen in hot swap applications. The UCC2917DTR also offers an optional on-die temperature sensing feature which allows it to switch to a lower power state if the temperature of the device exceeds a certain limit. This feature ensures that the device remains within an acceptable power dissipation threshold. Furthermore, the device also offers a standby mode which can be used to reduce power in the system when the load is inactive.
