UCC2921N Application Field and Working Principle

Main Features

UCC2921N is a single-channel hot swap controller. It is suitable for hot insertion into a live system and features a wide operating voltage range from 5V to 25V. It also has protection features such as active current source and sink architecture, building-in OVP and OCP protection, and adjustable dead-time for soft-start and current limiting.

Functional Description

UCC2921N contains a power MOSFET, under voltage and over voltage comparators, an adjustable current limit circuit and a maximum duty cycle clock. The power FET can be either a single N-channel or P-channel MOSFET depending on the device package. It also contains programmable current limit and deadtime functions. The device is designed to limit in-rush current when hot-plugging a voltage source into a live system. It provides an adjustable current limit range from 0.7A to 4A and a soft start function controlled by an adjustable deadtime. The adjustable current limit can be set via an external resistor.

Setup Procedure

The setup procedure for UCC2921N is simple. All the necessary parameters such as current limit and deadtime can be set via external resistors.First, place the device on a good thermal ground. Then set the current limit resistor (SET), deadtime resistor (DEADTIME) and slew rate resistor (SLEW). Finally, connect the power input and output to the desired components.

Operation

When power is applied to the UCC2921N, the power FET is turned on and off at a rate determined by the external resistor connected to SET. This operation is similar to a PWM signal. In addition, the maximum duty cycle of the power FET can be regulated by the internal clock. The adjustable deadtime resistor (DEADTIME) will control the soft start time of the voltage source. When the voltage source is removed, the power FET is turned off and the system will remain protected.
