The UCD7100PWPG4, or Pulse Width Phase Generator part of the Universal Digital Controller (UCD7100) family from the Texas Instruments Power Management Integrated Circuits (PMIC) – Gate Drivers product line, offers an innovative solution to many power supply systems in need of improved efficiency and decreased total system cost. This device is designed to be an easy-to-use, highly flexible, pulse width modulation/phase gap phase generator that can be used in a wide variety of applications including, but not limited to: uninterruptible power supplies, solar micro-inverters, high-efficiency motor drives, switch-mode power supplies, and motor control.
The UCD7100PWPG4 is designed to be a highly flexible solution, with features including user adjustability, improved performance, and an integrated power factor controller. The PWPG4 includes two independent pulse width modulation (PWM) generators for providing accurate control of any two- or three-phase power distribution system. The PWPG4 also includes two input channels for current programming, one for each driving device, as well as the capability for the user to control the device under load conditions. It also has a programmable Pulse Width Modulation Clock Rate that allows for the frequency of the PWM to be adjusted.
The PWPG4 also includes two PWM outputs for driving two independent switching circuits. These outputs are capable of providing pulse widths up to 12.5µs and accommodate a wide range of PWM frequency ranges (125kHz to 250kHz). This enables the user to operate the device at both low and high frequencies depending on the application. Additionally, it has an adjustable ramp-up and down time for the PWM outputs which enables soft-switching of drivers. This allows for improved efficiency and decreased total harmonic distortion (THD).
The UCD7100PWPG4 also has an integrated power factor controller, which is designed to reduce the THD of the power distribution system and improve overall efficiency. The PFC adjusts the duty cycle and pulse width of each power output in order to achieve a specific power factor target. Additionally, the use of the PFC also results in reduced current draw from the power grid, thereby making it a more efficient, cost-effective solution.
