TVS – Diodes

Transient Voltage Suppressor (TVS) diodes or Thyristors suppress voltage transients, also known as surges, and are excellent electrical components for protecting against catastrophic circuit failures. They are often used in Electronic Control Units (ECU) and other controllers, communications, and power protection applications. TVSs are commonly used for lightning protection, overvoltage protection, and also in place of a zener diode or MOSFET. UCLAMP3311Z.TNT is a type of unidirectional & bidirectional TVS diode which gathers the following features such as low clamping voltage, high pulse power and very fast response time. This diode is able to withstand 1500W peak pulse power and featuring 3.2V clamping voltage. This TVS diode is designed and used for applications which requires ultra-low capacitance such as USB 3.1 and USB 2.0.

Application Field

One of the main application fields of UCLAMP3311Z.TNT is in overvoltage protection. It is especially effective for electronics that are subject to extreme voltage spikes. It helps protect CPUs and other electrical components from short-term overvoltage events, which may damage and destroy the sensetive components from operating beyond their normal parameters. It is also common in protecting automotive electronic components from overvoltage events which can damage the circuit. UCLAMP3311Z.TNT is able to protect against high voltage transients on automotive networks like CAN-Bus, LIN-Bus, I2C, etc. as well as other military/aviation/industrial applications. This diode is able to meet the requirements of different industries such as smart phones, GPS/navigation systems, 5G/Cellular, LAN, and also consumer electronics. In automotive and consumer electronics applications, this diode can provide protection against electrostatic discharge (ESD) as well as from devices plugged into USB ports.

Working Principle

UCLAMP3311Z.TNT is a unidirectional & bidirectional TVS diode. It operates as a bidirectional diode-like component that is designed to clamp and dissipate transients with very fast response time. This diode employs a silicon avalanche breakdown concept to provide superior ESD protection in ultra-low capacitance application. When installed, UCLAMP3311Z.TNT will create a voltage clamp on a line when a voltage spike occurs, thus it will prevent the voltage from exceeding a certain level. Once the voltage is clamped, the diode will then start to dissipate the voltage spike until it subsides. During the time it is dissipating the surge, the UCLAMP3311Z.TNT will draw current, thus limiting the voltage. When a voltage spike is detected, UCLAMP3311Z.TNT will effectively limit the rise time and also peak magnitude of the transient voltage. This allows the generated transient to be safely absorbed by the TVS diode without damaging other components in the circuit. In short, its primary purpose is to protect the circuit it is connected to from overvoltage transients. In conclusion, UCLAMP3311Z.TNT is a type of unidirectional & bidirectional Transient Voltage Suppressor (TVS) diode that is designed to provide protection from overvoltage transients. It is effective in overvoltage protection applications as well as providing protection for electronics that are subject to extreme voltage spikes.
