Aluminium electrolytic capacitors (also known as aluminum electrolytic capacitors, electro-lytic capacitors, or electrolytic capacitors) are polarised capacitors whose anode electrode is made of a pure aluminum foil covered with an insulating aluminum oxide layer. The oxide layer acts as the dielectric of the capacitor, and the amount of electrical charge the device can hold is proportional to the surface area of the aluminum foil anode. Aluminium electrolytic capacitors have a very high capacitance per unit volume, which makes them useful in power electronics, power supplies, amplifiers, and other applications requiring large amounts of capacitance.
