Aluminum Electrolytic Capacitors

An aluminum electrolytic capacitor is an electronic component consisting of two aluminum plates separated by an electrolyte and an insulating oxide layer. It is generally used for applications requiring high capacitance, better than that of traditional capacitors. Due to their relatively low cost, high capacitance, and long life, aluminum electrolytic capacitors are widely used in AC/DC power supply and power inverter circuits, for both high and low voltage applications.The UKA1A332MHD aluminum electrolytic capacitor is especially suitable for high-temperature, high-reliability automotive applications. It features a high-temperature operation range of up to +125°C, a ripple current rating of 6.2A and a very long life of > 3000h at +105°C. Those benefits make the UKA1A332MHD quite suitable for the more demanding automotive applications.The working principle of an aluminum electrolytic capacitor is based on the interaction of the aluminum plates and the electrolyte. When a potential (voltage) is applied to the capacitor, an electric field builds up between the two plates. This electric field polarizes the electrolytic solution and the non-conductive layer on top of the aluminum plates. This creates ions that migrate to the electric field (an effect called “electrochemical migration”) and accumulate on the surfaces of the plates. The built-up charges form the electrical equivalent of a very thick plastic film, known as the “dielectric”, between the plates of the capacitor. This forms the capacitor’s dielectric barrier and creates an electric field between the plates.The dielectric barrier serves to capacitively couple electric fields between the plates, thus forming the capacitor’s capacitance and allowing it to store energy. The bigger the electric field between the plates, the bigger the capacitance. The stored charge in the plates is a function of the applied voltage to the capacitor and can range from very low values (order of picoFarads) for small capacitances, to extreme values (order of Farads) for large capacitances.In summary, the UKA1A332MHD aluminum electrolytic capacitor is a reliable and optimal solution for the more demanding automotive applications requiring high-temperature operation and long-life.
