An aluminum electrolytic capacitor is an electronic component consisting of two aluminum plates separated by an electrolyte and an insulating oxide layer. When a potential (voltage) is applied to the capacitor, an electric field builds up between the two plates. This electric field polarizes the electrolytic solution and the non-conductive layer on top of the aluminum plates. This creates ions that migrate to the electric field (an effect called “electrochemical migration”) and accumulate on the surfaces of the plates. The built-up charges form the electrical equivalent of a very thick plastic film, known as the “dielectric”, between the plates of the capacitor. This forms the capacitor’s dielectric barrier and creates an electric field between the plates.The dielectric barrier serves to capacitively couple electric fields between the plates, thus forming the capacitor’s capacitance and allowing it to store energy. The bigger the electric field between the plates, the bigger the capacitance.
