Aluminium electrolytic capacitors are a type of capacitor that uses an electrolyte and a porous aluminium oxide containing an anode and a cathode to store electrical energy. The advantages of aluminium electrolytic capacitors are their relatively large capacity, their ability to store more energy in a relatively small size and their relatively low cost. The electrodes of an aluminium electrolytic capacitor are formed by coating aluminium foil with a porous aluminium oxide, which acts as the dielectric material. The electrolyte, usually a liquid, is applied and a barrier forms to protect the electrolyte from corrosion.

The UPB2D101MHD aluminum electrolytic capacitor has a wide application in many areas such as power conversion, drive, audio electronics, and industrial automation. It is designed in a miniature SMD package and rated for operation at a temperature of -55℃ to +105℃ and a maximum ripple current of 0.19 A. The capacitor consists of an aluminium foil anode electrode, a dielectric layer, and a cathode formed by oxygenation of the aluminium foil. When an AC voltage is applied, the capacitor charges and discharges the held energy between the anode and cathode. As the oxide layer stores energy in the capacitor, current is transferred from one side to the other. The oxide layer acts as a capacitor and is the medium of charge transfer between the anode and cathode. As current flows, the capacitor stores energy, and when the current is low, energy is released from the stored charge. The UPB2D101MHD has a very high ripple current capability which is why it is most commonly used in applications requiring a higher current.
