Aluminum Electrolytic Capacitors

Aluminum electrolytic capacitors are one of the most common types of capacitors used in electronic circuits. They are made from an aluminum oxide film that is formed on the aluminum foil, which serves as the positive electrode. The negative electrode is usually a carbon-impregnated paper foil. The capacitor is filled with an electrolyte that completes the circuit by acting as a medium between the two electrodes. This construction gives the aluminum electrolytic capacitors a very large capacitance that can store a significant amount of electrical energy.

UPM1K560MPD1TD is a two-pin aluminum electrolytic capacitor. It is a radial leaded capacitor, which means that its two leads are “bent” from the body of the capacitor. It is mainly used in low frequency circuits where high capacitance is required, such as in power supplies, audio systems, radios, amplifiers and consumer electronics. The main advantages of using UPM1K560MPD1TD are its larger energy storage capacity and the ability to handle high currents.

UPM1K560MPD1TD has a working principle similar to other aluminum electrolytic capacitors. When DC voltage is applied across its two terminals, a passage is created in the capacitor, which can be viewed as a direct current circuit. The voltage applied in this direct current circuit generates an electric field across the aluminum oxide film, enabling the flow of electrons between the two terminals and facilitating the conduction of current.

When current passes through the capacitor, the electric field generated charges up the aluminum foil, forming a plate with a positive charge on the surface. The aluminum foil and the carbon-impregnated paper foil become a single unit, which can store energy. The strength of the stored energy relies on the amount of charge stored in the capacitor.

UPM1K560MPD1TD has a maximum operating voltage of 560VDC for 1000 hour, with a capacitance of 470μF and a temperature range of -25 to +85°C. Its typical lifetime is 2000 hours for 70°C and 1000 hours for 85°C.
