Aluminum Electrolytic Capacitors

Aluminum electrolytic capacitors are polarized electrolytic capacitors whose anode electrode is made of a pure aluminum foil with an etched surface. This is the main component of the capacitor the other component being a liquid or solid electrolyte. They offer larger capacitance values per unit volume than other capacitors, making them desirable for high density applications. They are also particularly good performers in terms of insulation resistance, ESR, and temperature stability.The UPT2W151MRD is an aluminum electrolytic capacitor with a rated capacitance of 150uF, operating voltage of 250V AC, and a tolerance of 10%. Working Principle

Nominally, an aluminum electrolytic capacitor consists of two aluminum foils separated by an insulator, known as the dielectric. One foil is the anode and has a coating of aluminum oxide, the other foil is the cathode.When a DC potential is applied across the aluminum electrolytic capacitor, a flow of charge carriers, usually negative ions, passes through the solvent in the electrolyte and enters the dielectric material between the two sheets of aluminum foil. This current, in combination with the applied voltage, causes an accumulation of ions at the anode foil, forming an electric field that is strong enough to create a thin oxide layer on the anode. This oxide layer acts as an insulating layer, effectively blocking the passage of current from the anode to the cathode. The oxide film, however, still allows electrical charge to pass from the anode to the cathode.As more charge accumulates at the anode, the oxide layer begins to thicken and the electric field in the capacitor becomes more intense. This continues until the capacitance reaches its maximum value. The thickness of the oxide layer is proportional to the voltage applied, thus the capacitance of the capacitor varies with the voltage applied. This is why aluminum electrolytics are characterized as having a specific rated voltage.In certain applications, aluminum electrolytic capacitors may be used to suppress ripple currents or to store electrical energy. The capacitive reactance of an aluminum electrolytic across the frequency range is much lower than that of other electrolytic types, allowing the capacitor to provide much higher levels of ripple current. Additionally, the large capacitance values available make them ideal for storing energy.
