Aluminum electrolytic capacitors (also known as electrolytic caps) are a type of capacitor which uses an electrolyte (a liquid or gel) to achieve their effect. Aluminum electrolytic capacitors are often referred to simply as electrolytic capacitors or electrolytic caps. They are made of two aluminum foils, one of which is etched with a pattern of many small parallel conductors. The other foil is connected to the first with a thin oxide layer. Between the two foils is a thin layer of electrolyte, usually an aqueous solution of boric acid or sodium hydroxide.
