Aluminum Electrolytic Capacitors

Aluminum electrolytic capacitors are one of the most popular and widely used capacitor types. They are made of two aluminum foils with thin oxide layers, separated by a paper saturated with an electrolytic solution. The “U” in UTM1A331MHD stands for “University” which indicates the academic nature of the application field.

Application Field of UTM1A331MHD

UTM1A331MHD is a type of electric double-layer capacitor, known as super capacitors. Comparing to traditional aluminum electrolytic capacitors, they have much higher capacitance and internal resistance. Super capacitors are widely used in industrial, automotive, aerospace and consumer applications. As a super capacitor, UTM1A331MHD is mainly used in energy storage, power backup, low-voltage pulse drive, and for buffering control.

Working Principle of UTM1A331MHD

When a voltage is applied to the capacitor, electric field is created to activate the electrons transferring between the aluminum oxide layer and the electrolyte. The activated electrons will attract and form two electrical double layers between the two aluminum foils and the electrolyTe. As the charge in the electric double layers increase, repulsive force will form and drive further electrons transfer and thus increasing the capacitance. The electric double layers are stabilized by the high surface area of the aluminum oxide layer, which will determine the capacitance.

Therefore, the major factor of capacitance in UTM1A331MHD is the high surface area of the aluminum oxide layer. This gives it much higher capacitance and internal resistance than traditional aluminum electrolytic capacitors. Furthermore, the capacitor also has high temperature stability, low leakage current, low energy loss and long life.
